Homemade hummus is one of those things that is such a game-changer. Not only is it cheaper to make your own, but it always tastes better than the store-bought route. Slathered on fresh, warm pita bread with a drizzle of really, really good extra virgin olive oil or spread on wraps is the best. While there are so many awesome flavors that I love, I emphatically LOVE roasted red pepper hummus. This red pepper hummus starts with chickpeas aka garbanzo beans, tahini, just a touch of garlic and lemon juice. After the base is blended I whiz in roasted red bell peppers from a jar, or even better, you can roast your own.

How to Make Roasted Red Pepper Hummus

This roasted red pepper hummus is such a breeze to make. There’s no cooking involved, no need to peel your chickpeas (I’ve heard before that you can peel them for an extra smooth hummus, but I don’t bother), and it’s ready in just 10 minutes.

Here’s how to make it:

  • Blend your beans. Combine the garbanzo beans, tahini, garlic, kosher salt, and cayenne pepper in the bowl of a food processor and process for 3-4 minutes or until super smooth.
  • Gradually add the liquid. Add the extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, and 2 tablespoons water and process for another minute.
  • Add the red bell peppers and process for 1 more minute minutes or until smooth. Scrape the bottom of the processor and the sides to combine all of the ingredients. Add another tablespoon of water if the hummus is too thick.
  • Season and serve. Taste for seasoning and add more salt, lemon juice, or cayenne pepper. Serve with chopped veggies or sliced pita bread.
